Final Exam Extra Credit

1. Explain what happened to the man that was killed by the subway and how the photographer was able to take the photo.
The man was pushed onto the track by a panhandler whom Ki Suk Han was trying to calm down earlier before he was pushed. R. Umar Abbasi took the picture by thinking that the flash of his camera could warn the driver that he should stop but it didn't work.

2. Why did the photographer say he took the photo?
Abbasi says he took the photo by using his flash to warn off the driver, but according to Abassi it didn't work that he was too late.

3. Do you think the photographer should have taken the photo?
No I think that the photographer could have taken the chance to help lift the man up instead of using his flash. From where the picture was taken I'd say he had enough time to help the man out from the tracks and onto the platform.

4. Do you think the photographer did the best thing he could have done in this situation? Why or why not?
No, this is not the best thing Abassi could have done. He could have saved his life, but instead he took the opportunity to take a photo.

5. Do you agree or disagree with the decision to run the photo on the front page of the New York Post? Explain why or why not.
I disagree this photo should not have gone anywhere it would have given the photographer what he wanted by sacrificing someones life for a picture that is just gruesome and awful.

6. What is more important to a photojournalist, capturing images of life as it happens or stopping bad things from happening? Why or why not?
To a photojournalist obviously capturing images is important, but in a situation where a life is in danger and you are given the opportunity to act and save that person it is inhuman to it back and take a photo of all the bad things that you have caused. Are you human or a photographer.

7. Do you think it is ever ethically acceptable for a photographer to involve himself/herself in a situation that he or she photographs? Explain why or why not.
Yes it is ok for a photographer to get involved not everything is this world needs to be captured. Some of the things you actually have to do and you have to help those who need it not just take a picture of them.

8. Should photojournalists always avoid influencing events as they happen? Explain your answer.
I think people should act to avoid these awful events photojournalist or not. If someones life is in danger your fist action needs to be to help and act not to pull out a camera take the time to set it up and take a picture and let all the bad things unfold.

9. After reading the responses from the professional photographers, what stands out as the most appropriate response for a photographer to this situation.
They are disgusted and they think that what he did make all others photographers very ashamed. They believe that he affected their own reputation. They were also mad at how other people around didn't do anything to help him. They are disgusted and shocked at what type of a world we live in.

Review

Taken at the Macy's Thanksgiving parade. Samuel Barnard in his apartment on the 13 floor of his apartment complex waking up to a giant Spongebob on his window.
Family vacation in Italy with Samuel Barnards siblings. Jumping off the makeshift diving boards into the cool blue waters are his two older brothers and younger brother. Its a family tradition to jump off this cliff.
Last night's performance at the Vazquez brothers performance. Great performance with their prized horse Daniel. Taken by Samuel Barnard who was present at the show.

1. Rule of thirds - The rule of thirds is a "rule of thumb" or guideline which applies to the process of composing visual images such as designsfilmspaintings, and photographs. The guideline proposes that an image should be imagined as divided into nine equal parts by two equally spaced horizontal lines and two equally spaced vertical lines, and that important compositional elements should be placed along these lines or their intersections.

2. Balancing Elements - formal balance, also called symmetrical balance. As the name suggest it is when one or more identical or similar subjects are repeated symmetrical on each sides of a given point. informal balance or so called asymmetrical balance is when one or more dissimilar elements are balancing on each side of a given point.

3. Leading Lines - In art, Leading Lines are lines that guide your eye through the painting or photograph.

4. Symmetry and Patterns (repetition) - They can make for very eye-catching compositions, particularly in situations where they are not expected. Another great way to use them is to break the symmetry or pattern in some way, introducing tension and a focal point to the scene.

5. Viewpoint - camera angle in photography, filmmaking, and other visual arts

6. Background - The back of the focus point in the picture can also create a sense of simplicity.

7. Create depth - making your eyes look beyond the photo like looking into the distance.

8. Framing - the action of framing something

9. Cropping - cropping the photo at a specific angle or position.

10. Mergers and avoiding them - A merger in photography occurs when a background object is directly in front or behind a subject. If there are multiple subjects in the photograph, a merger can also occur if both main subjects overlap with each other or touch the sides of the picture frame.

3. List the changes that were made to the model in the computer. (Look carefully)

They made the girls skinnier and they would change the skin tone. These photo shoppers were trying to make the girls "prettier."

4. Is it ethically acceptable to change a person's appearance like these in a photo? Why or why not?

No its not. It's disrespectful to the model. It can hurt feeling and hurt self esteems.
people should not just be changed completely for the entertainment of others.

5. Are there circumstances in which it would be more ethically wrong to do this type of manipulation?

Its always wrong. People should not change their faces and hide natural beauty by people who believe they are not.
6. What types of changes are OK, and what aren't?

Makeup and hair. Just nothing that makes the model look like a totally different person.
7. Explain what you think the differences are between fashion photography and photojournalism.

Fashion photography, you have to shoot people and clothes. To go with trends or start them. Its for the entertainment. Photojournalism is different because you write about your experiences with shooting and what you learned. It can be about anything.
8. What relationship does each type of photography have to reality, and how does this affect the ethical practice of each?

Each one shows real things in the world, but for fashion photography its all different you change things to get the trends set and make your company more popular and make more money.
9. Why do you think I am showing you these three videos?

So we can see the truth behind photoshop and whats its capable of.
10. Why are none of these videos about guys???

Men editing is less popular because its usually a girls job to sit there and look pretty.

Balance

For the portrait assignment i want to shoot Christian. I believe a good place to shoot for her is either somewhere in the courtyard or somewhere where there is a lot of flowers and nature. To make this shoot successful I want to be able to use the surrounding to my advantage which is why i want nature involved, it can be used as good props bring good lighting and it just makes a beautiful background. So around the garden or that place in the courtyard with the bench.

Fixed photo shoot

This picture shows like and how it meets up at one point which is the girl and her nike at the ed of the bus.

This shows balance and great lighting which means it had good shutter speed.

Casual portrait

This picture is vintage and has an oldies feel to it. But even with what you feel its a great photograph that is in perfect balance and its lighting is great.
This photo uses rule of thirds and the effect of the black and white filter.

Self Portrait

THis portrait is very serious and plain, but it shows a lot of emotion and value to it. Very balanced and great aperture.
This photo is very wacky and goofy, but with that it shows how creative the photographer is.

Environmental portraits

This photo was shot at a very creative angle and set up really beautifully. The whole picture is in proportion and makes it seem as though this is a real life situation.

THe background is obviously nature. This photo uses rule of thirds to place everything in perfect balance.

Tips

You could do it by placing your subject in a window or doorway, have them look through a small gap or even use their hands around their face.

Sometimes you want your background to be as minimalistic as possible.

Leave the full image out of focus. To do this again choose a wide aperture but focus well in front or behind anything that is in your image (you’ll need to switch to manual focussing to achieve this).

Shutter speed

Shutter Speed

high shutter speed

Low shutter speed

Aperture

Aperture

F 2.8

F 16

1. The part of the body that is closely related to the aperture of the camera is the pupils of the human eye.
2. The smaller the aperture the higher the f-stop.
The higher the aperture the lower the f-stop.
3. The aperture is pretty much what affects the depth of field the most. The higher the aperture the more one object is focused, on some pictures the affects will work on it, but on others the affect will only look like its badly photoshopped.

cancer picture reaction

1. When I saw this picture there was a flood of emotions that words cannot describe. I've been to something exactly like this with my mother.

2. I agree with this mans words. These images show the way of life and make you feel what he felt at those exact moment makes you know the woman and her husband.

3. I would never have thought of it. It also seems like something you wouldn't think of at the moment.

4.I would tell him to hang in there it will get better, your wife was beautiful so you will never forget her. Never forget those you love and with these images you will never forget.

Nick Brandt

I was pretty much blown away by his photos. They were extraordinary and iconic. Each on head there own very special thing about each of them and that makes them all so powerful.

This photo shows the power of the animals they look strong and real. Its as if Nick is putting me behind the lens and tell me to take a picture of the lions. The image also symbolizes that there is something behind every beast. Obviously these are wild animals and they love in the wild, but there is something about the animals that not everyone sees. But Nick has captured the tremendous moment where love live in the wild.

Nick Brandt's style of photography is totally different than any others. "He photographs on medium-format black and white film without telephoto or zoom lenses." (wikipedia, Nick Brandt) "You wouldn't take a portrait of a human being from a hundred feet away and expect to capture their spirit; you'd move in close." (wikipedia, Nick Brandt Quote). Which Shows how he really enjoyed capturing images with animals. He did not believe in taking iconic pictures from far away. What are u experiencing when you are yards away from the action.

Well as you can see in the picture three of the old people on this bench are trying to make this a good picture, while that lovely old lady in the middle real doesn't give a crap.
Sue the lady in the middle is actually a really nice old lady, she goes to my church an everything I don't know what in heaven or hell possessed her to do this.
The other men at her side sitting on the bench are actually her older brothers and they are the bad ones.

This is Mindy. She just got out of jail recently for streaking naked down the road. I asked her to pose as if the whole world was going to see this picture. She did this.

This is Joe and Miranda they don't know what is going on. Neither does Josie in the back. To sum it up, old people are not good protesters. They pretty much forgot w hat we were protesting about 5 minutes after I told them.

Irving Penn
Ballet Theater

This photo caught my eye because of the way it was set up. Everyone is in perfect positions to not just make it look like they were posing, but it looks really natural.

I see a large theater, very famous and physically large theater. Actors and dancers rush to get there makeup done and get to their position. I smell sweat of the ballerinas and the dust of all the old props. The tension where usually u can't smell something like that because it is a state of mind. I hear soft dance music, and choreographers and directors giving out orders to make everyone 10x better. Oh its sounds like the doors are opening to let the cheery and excited crowds in. I taste the air its bitter, but sweet, pretty much like coffee. I feel like alice in her theater themed wonderland.

John Gutman
Bicycle of a Mexican Barber,
San Antonio, 1937
This photo caught my eye because of the angle that is was in. The photo looked very weird at first because it was small it actually looked like something else. Once i opened the link it totally surprised me. So from there i really liked the photo.

I see a motorcycle. Not in motion, but it still keeps your eyes in motion around the photo. I smell the work sweat of the barber after a long day at work under the hot San Antonio sun. I hear the motor slowly awakening ready to drive his owner to his destination. I taste the sensation of the driver ready to move.

Mural theme

1. We could do a theme that inspires the generation, to break reality and stand out, everyone in there own different way. Break reality.

2. Yes we should use cameras. Not just because some people don't use camera phones, but that there is better quality in real cameras.

3. In the Academic hall.

5 Photos

Lines

1. How well did you follow the rule?
The rule of lines it that the lines lead you throughout the image if I were to star myself from a scale of 1-10 it would be a 7.

2. What is the subject?
The subject is what the girl is drawing if you look to the paper you can see that at the moment most of what she has drawn are lines that lead you throughout her paper, but the lines are not leading your eyes across the actual image.

3. Is it clear to people looking at your photos what the subject it?
Like I said before in the last question the image that the girl is drawing is not very clear to the viewer, you could say by looking at this picture, that I did not avoid mergers.

4. If you didn't follow the rule well, what could you have done differently?
I could have focused more on the drawing and also avoided the merger of the girl's body is pretty much covering the entire drawing.
Rule of Thirds

1.  How well did you follow the rule?
I believe i followed the rule quiet well. Kai, the name of the girl in the image, her head is right smack on the intersection of the lines if you were to draw an imaginary grid.

2.  What is the subject?
Its the books in the back. No, obviously its Kai and her head.

3. Is it clear to the people looking at your photos what the subject is?
Yes. It's the only thing in the entire picture that is focused.

4. If you didn't follow the rule, what could you have done differently?
I followed the rule.

Simplicity

1. How well did you follow the rule?
If I had to rate my photo on a scale of 1-10 its would be a 9.

2. What is the subject?
The subject are the sticky notes on the wall.

3. Is it clear to people looking at your photos what the subject is?
Yes,  by using the bright colors on the sticky notes and bringing them out with photoshop.

4. If you didn't follow the rule well, what could you have done differently?
Nothing I really like how this picture turned out.

Balance

1. How well did you follow the rule?
On a scale of 1-10 about 5.

2. What is the subject?
The subject are the students and there desks and how different they all look in the picture so your not just staring at one part of the photo.

3. Is it clear to the people looking at your photos what the subject is?
Yes.

4. If you didn't follow the rule well, what could you have done differently?
I could have taken at a better angle with better lighting.

Framing

1. How well did you follow the rule?
In my opinion I followed the rule really well.

2. What is the subject?
The subject is the view the way the teacher sees the classroom, in other words the teachers point of view.

3. Is it clear to people looking at your photo what the subject is?
I believe it would be really easy to figure it out.

4. If you didn't follow the rule well, what could you have down differently?
I think this picture si really good the way it is.

Academics/Community service

The image that I chose is the action shot of a paint speaker. If you don know what I'm talking about let me explain. You put a piece of thin plastic and place it on a large speaker then you pour paint on it. Once you place the paint you play music loud and the paint should bounce up and down with the rhythm of the sound waves. Once captured in a photo the image should come out to be a beautiful action shot of the paint. Its a very beautiful piece if shot correctly at the right angle. And that is why I chose it. Perfect angle, wonderful focus of the paint. There is beautiful balance and great framing, but you could have avoided some of those nasty mergers if the person moved out of the way.

1. In a classroom full of action and life. That would be the perfect place to shoot photos like these.

2. I would actually like to visit a P.E. class, or a chemistry class that has a lab that day.

3. I will really focus, and think before I shoot. And once I thought it through try to capture a wonderful image.

The Story

The Story

The Story

This image can be anything because so much is join going on in the picture. It could be a memorial. A prayer. A funeral. Pretty much anything.

Action and Emotion

Surprised. that is the emotion in the girls face. Surprise, and wonder  in her eyes. Wonder because obviously she is happy with what just happened.

Filling the Frame

This picture is not my favorite, but it does show balance and I don't have my eyes just in one place.

Tuesday, September 23, 2014

This picture actually makes sense on why they photoshopped it. And it doesn't change your opinion on it and doesn't make it seem like its not actually happening.

Photoshop

1. This essay explains how Photoshop can get you in huge trouble and could ruin your working job. Photoshop has been used for many things, but it could also get you in serious trouble when used incorrectly.

2. Obviously photoshopped was created to help the photographer improve his pictures, and transform them into something new.
http://brynsphotojournalismblog.blogspot.com/2014/09/first-prompt-photo-shoot.html?showComment=1411503066094#c490324336314159991

The photos were unique and different and I would not have thought of them in the first place at all.

They are also very original and new.

I think that the locker pictures could could have been taken at a better angle.

Overall these pictures were unique.

Post Shoot Reflection

1. Their were really not may challenges with this shoot it was very easy, but one thing that did bother me was finding good lighting.

2. Focus, I was trying to get a good focus on each picture. And with the bad lighting it was very hard.

3. I would follow those rules and get better pictures in general. After learning some basic rules I looked back on my pictures and I think wow my pictures sucked.

4. Nothing I would change the whole thing.

6. Yes i would love to shoot the same prompts again just to improve them. Especially after learning the rules.

Avoiding Mergers
This photographer is not avoiding his/her mergers. I'm seeing the lady in the bright red shirt more than the huge explosion on the world trade center. The small black building is also ruining the image completely. I believe that is is just a bad picture.

FRAMING
This picture is a combination of a lot of elements, but is also fell into the category of framing. The window frames a building that is completely destroyed due to the attack. And all the damage on the inside of the window leads you to the true and del damage of the photo.
BALANCE
I'm till not really sure what balance really is, but my interpretation is that the picture is not just focused on one abject but your eyes move around the picture and you look at the photo from every perspective.
LINE
This photo is a good example of line because your eye view is being taken by the road . Fist you read the sign, but then your eye moves to the road. As you notice with the sign that all flights are cancelled so the journey to the airport is totally empty.
